Government of Canada has finalised their new immigration quotas for 2011. In the wake of the continuing economic downturn countries are looking to reduce their immigration quotas for 2011. Canada on the other hand has been fortunate not to be in a severe economic downturn is looking at immigration to continue to sustain its economic recovery and boost it’s workforce.
Canada’s 2011 immigration quota is 240,000 to 265,000 and 60% of these immigrants are expected to come from the economic stream (federal skilled worker program and provincial immigration programs). In 2011, government of Canada wants to balance the number of immigrants between Federal and provincial programs to fulfill the work force needs of both national and regional markets.
“Canada’s post-recession economy demands a high level of legal immigration to keep our work force strong,” said Jason Kenney, minister of Citizenship, Immigration and Multiculturalism “At the same time, we are maintaining our commitment to family reunification and refugees.”
Like many other European countries with aging population, the size of the workforce is shrinking in Canada too because of low birth rates and aging population. Within the next 5 years all of Canada’s work force growth will come from immigration.
One of the highlights of the Immigration plan for 2011 is to include a higher range of admissions for spouses and children in the family category to help unify more immigrant families.
If you are looking to immigrate to Canada this is a wonderful opportunity to think about and then act on. Today, Minister Jason Kenney announced the long-awaited updated list of occupations for the Federal Skilled Worker program of Canadian Immigration.
Canada’s 2010 quota for immigration is about 265,000 immigrants. The focus is on economic immigration to help the ease shortage of work force and boost the economy. And, Canadian immigration wants to reduce the backlog of older, already filed in process applications of Federal Skilled Worker (FSW) so they have gone ahead and reduced the number of eligible occupations so that they can finalise the pending applications and reduce the backlog.
This is indeed good news for all those people who have been in the pipeline for some years now. Soon they will have some update on their pending applications. But what about the rest of us, who were thinking of immigrating to Canada. Currently there are about 380,000 pending FSW applications down from 640,000 in Nov 2008.
Now what? There are 29 eligible occupations effective today, 26th June 2010 that are eligible to apply for FSW or have a job offer. The main purpose is to reduce the number of new applications. To achieve that goal they will only be taking a fixed amount of applications per eligible occupation for the year. So it will become a first come first serve FSW program. This will bring Canadian economic immigration program (federal skilled worker program) in line with the rest of the world, namely UK, Australia and New Zealand.
Wait for our next post with the list of the new in-demand occupations or eligible occupations and what is the new cutoff number of applications per year introduced today by the Canadian authorities.
Contact Immigration Zone Canada or fill up the free assessment form asap so that you know if you are eligible to apply for immigration to Canada.

Citizenship, Immigration and Multiculturalism minister Jason Kenney, introduced legislation in the Canadian House of Commons to crack down on crooked consultants who exploit prospective immigrants.
“While most immigration consultants working in Canada are legitimate and ethical, it is clear that immigration fraud remains a widespread threat to the integrity of Canada’s immigration system,” said Minister Kenney. “The Cracking Down on Crooked Consultants Act will better protect prospective immigrants from crooked consultants and help safeguard our immigration system against fraud and abuse.”
Once the act becomes the law it will be a crime for unauthorised individuals to charge a fee for providing immigration services. It would also give power to the government to designate a body that would enforce and regulate immigration consultants and establish measures to enhance the government’s oversight of this body.
“Crooked immigration consultants victimize people who dream of immigrating to Canada,” said Minister Kenney. “Worse still, there is evidence that these individuals encourage prospective immigrants to lie on their immigration applications, to concoct bogus stories about persecution when making refugee claims, or to enter into sham marriages with Canadian citizens and permanent residents. This undermines the integrity and fairness of Canada’s immigration system.”
Minister also mentioned that Citizenship and Immigration Canada will announce setting up of a transparent public selection process to identify a governing body to regulate immigration consultants in an attempt to gain public confidence.

Citizenship and Immigration Minister Jason Kenney has been asked with exploring ways to fast-track the process of bringing Haitians into Canada under the family reunification program.
The announcement will be augmented with new immigration rules that will make it easier for Haitians to join family members in Canada. As well, people in Canada who for whatever reason may be required to return to Haiti – because, such as, their visa has expired – will be granted an extension, permitting them to stay in Canada temporarily.
With Montreal being the center of the Haitian-Canadian community, there are about 150,000 people of Haitian origin in Canada. The backlog of Haitians seeking to join family members in Canada stretches back for years. But Prime Minister Stephen Harper has promised that the government will quickly put in place measures to improve the immigration process for Haitians in the wake of this week’s calamity.
